Root Canal Treatment

​A root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed. The procedure involves removing the infected or inflamed tissue (pulp) from inside the tooth and then cleaning, shaping, and filling the root canals, and then placing a crown over the tooth. This procedure can save a damaged or infected tooth and prevent the need for extraction.

How do you know if you need a root canal?

Root canals are needed for a cracked tooth , a deep cavity, or issues from a previous filling. Patients generally need a root canal when they notice their teeth are sensitive, particularly to hot and cold sensations. 

  • Severe pain while chewing or biting

  • Pimples on the gums

  • A chipped or cracked tooth

  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the sensation has been removed

  • Swollen or tender gums

  • Deep decay or darkening of the gums

Are antibiotics required?

Antibiotics are NOT a cure for root canal treatment and should NOT be prescribed in otherwise healthy patient for a small localized swelling without systemic signs or symptoms of an infection.

Clinical treatment of the infected tooth is the optimum treatment. Antibiotics are only indicated in severe cases with systemic involvement.

What are the steps involved in doing a root canal?

A root canal treatment typically involves 3 steps:

  1. Cleaning the root canal

  2. Filling the root canal

  3. Adding a crown or filling

Post-operative instructions after a root canal treatment include:

  1. Take pain medication as prescribed by your dentist to manage any discomfort.

  2. Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or chewy foods for a few days after the procedure.

  3. Avoid biting or chewing on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration is placed.

  4. Brush and floss your teeth as usual, but be gentle around the treated area.

  5. Avoid smoking

  6. Schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist to check the treated tooth and to ensure proper healing.
